About

One of New Zealand’s more experienced commercial photographers, I began my professional career as a cadet press photographer with the Auckland Star, a then daily evening newspaper.

During the eleven years I worked for “The Star” I covered every type of assignment including sport, fashion, Royal tours, theatrical/showbusiness, aerial and of course general news.

My speciality during those press days was covering theatrical productions and rock concerts, having been commissioned on many occasions to shoot specifically for the artists on a personal basis.

Some of the “names” to have commissioned my services included Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Status Quo, Fleetwood Mac, Alice Copper and the late John Denver.

In 1984 I won the Qantas Press Photographer of the Year Award (for pictures taken in 1983) after a number of “runner-up” awards in that competition in previous years and category wins in the now long defunct Dulux Press Awards.

In 1985 I resigned from the Auckland Star to pursue a commercial photographic career, my extensive and varied press training allowing me to secure clients working in many sectors of commerce and industry.

Following five very successful years freelancing in Auckland, I spent the next ten years in the UK gaining valued international experience.

During that time, based in Southampton, I was able to indulge my passion in all things maritime when I secured Associated British Ports as my key client.

ABP, owners of many of the UK’s major ports, frequently called on my services each week to assist their extensive marketing, advertising and media campaigns.

This led to commissions from many of ABP’s clients (cruise ship owners/operators, car manufacturers, yacht transporters as well as an array of various importers/exporters. I also became a regular supplier of photographs to the UK’s major maritime publications, Lloyds List newspaper and Fairplay magazine and five years ago I established the website Seapixonline.com, a maritime picture gallery and a site also used as a research tool by maritime writers and historians.

A complete contrast in work came when the BBC began commissioning me to shoot programme production and promotion pictures. This saw me working with some of the UK’s popular television personalities including Noel Edmonds, Charlie Dimmock, Phillip Schofield (a former New Zealand TV celeb of the 70’s), Gaby Roslin, Nick Knowles and Jamie Theakston, to name a few.

My client list while in the UK was many and varied including, apart from those mentioned above, British Gas, the Marine Safety Agency (now the MCA), the British Red Cross, Royal Yachting Association, government departments, local government, residential home builders, the petrochemical industry, executive recruitment, public relations and marketing agencies etc.

Now living back in Auckland’s East Coast Bays I am available to undertake most types of photographic commissions at very reasonable rates and can be contacted on 64+(0)21-479494 or via the contact link on this website.
